What to expect at your first massage appointment at Lotus Moon
November 15, 2025
I'm Cheryl at Lotus Moon and I understand that booking your first massage can feel like a big step. Maybe you’re feeling a bit nervous, unsure about what will happen, or wondering if it will really help you relax. My intention is to make your experience gentle, grounding and completely pressure-free from the moment you arrive.
This guide walks you through exactly what to expect at your first massage appointment, so you can feel comfortable, prepared, and ready to relax.
Before your appointment
Booking your session
You’ll start by choosing the massage treatment that resonates most with you – for example, a relaxing full-body massage, a more focused back, neck and shoulder session, or a treatment to support stress and anxiety such as Hot stone or Indian head massage. If you’re not sure what you need, that’s completely okay. You can share what you’re experiencing (stress, tight shoulders, trouble sleeping, etc.), and together we can decide on the most supportive treatment for you.
How to prepare
You don't need to do much but to get the most out of your session I would recommend:
- Hydrate gently – drink some water before and after your massage.
- Avoid heavy meals right before your appointment.
- Arrive a little early – giving yourself five or so extra minutes means you don’t have to rush and can arrive in a calmer state.
- Wear comfortable clothes – you’ll be undressing for the massage, but it helps to feel relaxed before and after.
You don’t need to do anything special or be any particular way. Just come as you are.
Arriving at Lotus Moon
When you arrive, you’ll be welcomed into a calm, soothing space designed to help you unwind straight away. Soft lighting, gentle music and a warm, peaceful atmosphere help your body and mind begin to relax even before you lie down on the massage table or chair.
If it’s your very first visit, there will be a short consultation form to complete. This helps me understand any:
- Medical conditions
- Injuries or areas of pain
- Allergies or sensitivities
- Preferences around pressure and areas to focus on (or avoid)
Everything you share is treated confidentially and with respect.
Your initial consultation
Before you get on the massage table, we’ll have a relaxed chat about how you’re feeling and what you’d like to receive from the session. You might share things like:
- “I’m really stressed and can’t switch off.”
- “My shoulders are always tight from working at a desk.”
- “I feel anxious and want help calming my nervous system.”
- “This is my first massage and I’m a bit nervous.”
From there, I’ll explain:
- Which massage approach I recommend
- How the session will flow
- Any areas I’ll pay particular attention to
- How you can communicate during the massage (pressure, comfort, etc.)
This is your time, so you’re encouraged to ask anything at all. There are no silly questions.
Privacy, comfort and undressing
One of the most common worries before a first massage is:
“What do I need to take off?”
Here’s how it works at Lotus Moon:
- You’ll be left in privacy to undress to your comfort level, usually down to underpants.
- You will lie on the massage table or chair and cover yourself with the blankets provided.
- Only the area being worked on is uncovered at any time; the rest of your body stays draped.
- You are always welcome to keep additional items of underwear on. Your comfort and sense of safety come first.
If at any point you feel cold, uncomfortable or unsure, you can simply say so and we’ll adjust things for you.
During the massage
Settling in
Once you’re on the massage table or chair and covered, I’ll check you’re comfortable – with pillows, blanket, and positioning – and then gently begin the massage.
The lighting will be soft, and there may be calming music in the background to help you relax more deeply.
How it feels
You may notice:
- Your breathing slowly deepening
- Your muscles softening
- Your mind becoming quieter
- A sense of warmth, heaviness or lightness in the body
It’s normal for the mind to wander at first. Over time, you may drop into a more meditative, floaty or deeply restful state.
Talking (or not talking)
Some clients like to chat a little at the beginning and then drift into quiet. Others prefer silence throughout. There’s no right or wrong – this is your space and time.
You never have to make conversation. You are always welcome to simply receive and rest.
Adjusting pressure and focus
You are in charge of the session. If you’d like:
- More or less pressure
- More time on a specific area (like neck, shoulders, back, feet)
- To avoid a particular area
…you can say so at any time. I won’t be offended – this is part of tailoring your massage to your body’s needs.
If You Feel Emotional
Massage doesn’t just work on muscles – it can also gently touch stored emotions and stress patterns held in the body. Sometimes clients may feel:
- Unexpected tears
- A sense of emotional release
- Waves of sadness, relief or spaciousness
This is completely normal and very welcome. Lotus Moon is a safe, non-judgemental space where all of you is allowed to be present. You don’t need to apologise or explain; you can simply let whatever arises move through, and I will hold the space gently for you.
After the Massage
When the massage is complete, I’ll let you know quietly and give you a few moments to come back to yourself before sitting up. It’s common to feel:
- Deeply relaxed
- A little “floaty” or dreamy
- More connected to your body
- Lighter in mood
Take your time getting off the couch and getting dressed. There is no rush.
Post-Treatment Care
I’ll usually suggest:
- Drinking water to support your body in releasing any tension and toxins
- Avoiding heavy meals or alcohol immediately afterwards
- Being gentle with yourself – if possible, give yourself a bit of space in your day to integrate the treatment rather than rushing straight into something stressful
We can also chat about what you noticed in your body and any areas that might benefit from further attention.
How Often Should You Come for Massage?
The ideal frequency depends on your needs:
- For high stress or anxiety, weekly or fortnightly sessions can be very supportive at first.
- For ongoing wellbeing and maintenance, many people find a massage every 3–4 weeks keeps tension at bay and supports emotional balance.
- For specific issues like chronic neck, back or shoulder tightness, we may agree a short series of sessions and then review how you feel.
There’s never any pressure to rebook on the spot, but I’m happy to suggest a plan if you’d find that helpful.
Common worries – gently answered
“What if I don’t like being touched?”
We’ll go at your pace, and you’re always in control. You can set boundaries and stop the session at any time.
“What if I fall asleep?”
That’s absolutely fine – and very common! It simply means your body feels safe enough to relax deeply.
“What if my body isn’t ‘perfect’?”
All bodies are welcome. You do not need to look a certain way to deserve care, touch or rest. Lotus Moon is a shame-free, judgement-free space.
“What if I get emotional or embarrassed?”
You’re human. Emotions are a natural part of healing. I hold space with compassion, not judgement.
