Indian Head Massage

'Champissage' or 'Champi' for short is the Hindu word for head massage.  It is a relaxing treatment involving acupressure and massaging techniques for the scalp, head, neck and  shoulders.  It helps to achieve a relaxed state of mind and body, whilst promoting health benefits for the whole body and increased circulation for the hair and scalp.

The Indian head massage is an ancient therapeutic practice used in India for a 1,000 years, usually by mothers on their daughters. It is part of the practice of medicine called Ayurveda, which aims to promote long life and the balance of the body’s energies. It was often used with spices and herbs that would promote good health and skin.

Traditionally, the Indian head massage was used at weddings and births. Today, it is used widely for therapeutic purposes as well as aiding the recovery of physical symptoms such as stress and anxiety.  Indian head massage may also help relieve headaches, sinusitis and eye strain, to name a few.

The Indian head massage treatment I offer usually starts by working into the shoulders, as this area often holds a lot of tension. We then move to the upper back, massaging and working around the shoulder blades. Following this, we move to the upper arms, stretching and relaxing the muscles. This is followed by using massage techniques up the neck to the base of the head applying soft pressure on acupressure points to relieve stress and tension. Finally, we move to the face and scalp. The face consists of gentle pressure points that are worked on and flow techniques are applied, followed by massage along the acupressure points of the head to aid a relaxing head massage.

In a spa setting, this massage may be coupled with oils, which condition the hair and promotes growth and healthy skin. Coconut and almond oil are the most popular to use, which are perfect for dry hair. Mustard oil, sesame oil, olive oil, and jasmine oil can also be used with varying specific benefits for skin and hair health.

I'm also able to deliver Indian Head Massage in a mobile or corporate setting, as this massage is usually done without oils to make it more accessible. The massage will still have naturally conditioning and therapeutic effects without them.
